in order to avoid design

I don't think the intent was to avoid design, there are plenty of non multiverse theories which avoid design. I think it was an attempt to avoid the whole idea that the future has not yet happened. In a multiverse, all pasts and futures exist in perpetuity and anything you wished would happen, has happened, just not in your particular spot on the multiverse. This is the kind of theory scientists come up with when they are afraid of dying. Maybe they die here, but they didn't die in some other patch of multiverse. It may touch on the life-after death part of religion, but design issues are definitely secondary.

"If someone thinks up an idea like the multiverse in order to avoid design, then they are letting their materialist religious beliefs drive their science."

You are very confused about the meaning of words. You have had this problem for some time. I recall you making the absurd statement in the past that atheists were religious! You obviously have difficulty grasping simple subject matter. No doubt, you have very little in the way of education and this prevents you from contributing to discussions in any but your demonstrably obtuse manner.
