There are space aliens living on our eyelashes, imagine that living invisible microcosmic world that caused so many diseases & complications that early man could only begin to have the dimmest awareness. Eventually though we started to catch on, the purification properties of fire & heat when plagues hit you burned the bodies, there's a galaxy of aliens in glass of water. Discovery of fire allowed cooking food & some sterilization from bacteria that was a major step forward in the survival of our species.

(Fire was also used to purge those demons & witches to, there's probably a direct connection?)

Life is probably common in the universe if brumar's fine tuned idea is true. I think people like to make fun of the "alien" idea because it reminds them secretly of that complicity they're already engaged in, that suspension of belief when engaged in that theatre of praying to magic deities and listening to mythical nebulous stories. Which is why we laugh & cry at the theatre/opera and little kids thought Superman really could stop bullets & leap tall buildings.

And Santa Claus is real.
