>>>Believe it or not, I actually agree with you here, in principal (except for that cultural wasteland part). I believe it. There's no reason particularly to believe from the nattering we do about MSFT and NSCP and related partisan topics that we might not agree about something else. Although I suspect habitual disagreement is a more engaging hobby for both of us. As far as the wasteland bit goes, I take it you have never lived in the small towns surrounding Seattle. Seattle itself has some life, it's an interesting place, quite similar to SF in ways. I've lived there twice, for two years or so each time, and commuted to there via plane for another year, so I know it pretty well. The whole strip of real cities within 100 miles of the coast, from Vancouver BC to San Diego share a common culture, accents, entertainments, style, etc. It really is quite different even in places like Sacramento, Reno, Bend, Spokane. The coastal strip is a multicultural, international, media-heavy high-income strip. Just east of us are the cowboys, for 2000 miles or so. In the small towns in all other directions the city folks are surrounded by lumberjacks and survivalists. Been there, done that. Give me a real city anyday, psychos and all. Redmond proper makes Hicksville, NY look like Paris. Of course the corporate influence has changed it. It's almost part of the corporate campus now, but that's even blander than the small town of the seventies. Unless you are really wild about big expanses of green, long overcast days indoors drinking latte's, working out & sports, and not much else. I lived in the northwest long enough in towns just like it to tire of it. Remember the whole point of locating in a place like Redmond, besides the cheap land, is that there's no competition for your employees, because nothing else is happening. And no real reason for them to leave the office ;-) The only thing that makes those poor saps lives tolerable is the freeway to Seattle. Where Bill lives, BTW. Happy Holidays, Chaz
