So you're against schools having the freedom to choose their own curricula because they're just going to teach "nonsense"?

It is called "standards". We have a civilization. And a technological one at that. There is a basic set of knowledge that all citizens need to have to be productive members. Teaching them nonsense is going to relegate them to being a permanent underclass.
