The Soviet Union broke up because it was outspent militarily. In some ways the chickens are coming home to roost now - especially since Russia holds the oil and gas trump card in Europe

Truth be known, Israel considers Syria a serious threat. Israel believes that Hezbollah (a Lebanese fighting force to which it lost the war in August 2006) gets its military hardware from Iran via Syria ! It's not surprising there is an ongoing war in Syria at this time. Israel is NOT as strong as it likes you to believe it is: You see, it lost to Hezbollah in 2006 despite given 10 extra days of fighting time to defeat Hezbollah. Israel has been making a lot of threats to unilaterally bomb Iran without US aid. But ever since 2005, the threats were talk, talk only. Since then Iran has been getting stronger and stronger. It successfully captured a state-of-the-art US drone !!! in 2011.
