Evolution is a closed story and a fact to the scientists of the world. Creationism only takes root among religious people. It is not a historical fact as recognized by any scientists, only to Bible literalists. This country was founded on religious Freedom, which means no religion should be imposed on anyone and it also means no religious teachings in public institutions. The minute we allow one religion to hold sway in public institutions, we open the door to other religions to do the same.

Actually, while some of the precepts of Evolution are a fact, there are a lot of unknowns. I would argue that those things which are speculative in nature could be taught for historical context, but those things that are fact could be taught as science.

For example, we still don't know where the first living cell came from. The answer to that question may [or may not] come in the next 50 or 100 years. But as of today we simply do not know how the first living cell came into existence. Some would argue chemistry, other would argue a religious basis but the simple truth is scientists cannot answer that question without speculating.

And there are a lot of unanswered questions about the details of Evolution as well. Until we have answers to all of that my view is that Creationism should continue to be taught as an historical topic.
