CE. Yes, you are right, and I see that 2013 results, excluding the gain on sale, were similar to previous year.

Yes, I do use forward p/e sometimes. Helpful to me to determine earnings direction.

I like GILD. It has a relatively low forward p/e and relatively high roe. Although Yahoo's 28 analysts provide a wide range of earnings estimates, I'll bet they, and the the research reports that indicate GILD rising earnings through 2015, are correct.

I am willing to act on this. (I'll have to hold the shares a couple of years, I would guess)

There are a couple of things related. One is that I admire you for not following anybody. I'm a follower, so I am influenced by gurus, and sometimes estimates by so-called analysts or experts.

Secondly, as I say, or would say, to value players -- if there's nothing to buy, don't buy anything. (In other words, going outside one's circle of competence can lead to sorrow.) Sitting still is just difficult for me in this market - so I stretch and bend: Some of the stocks I like and will buy or consider buying just are not going to offer a good value proposition or have the value buyer's margin of safety. Plenty of risk with something like GILD now.

CE: I cautiously add a few more shares to my small Celanese position.

Last month company reported record quarterly results. This month the company has been announcing price increases for several of its chemicals. investors.celanese.com

I interpret this as an offensive vs. defensive move--- "we're making good profits, but we're nevertheless raising prices-- because we can". This might work out to be good for future profits and the stock. (Or not)
