Several studies show that many animals which fail at tests for self-awareness, test positive for empathy. What this apparently means is that a variety of animals, mammals as well as non-mammals such as octopi , are able to detect and judge the the probable intention of the animals around them. They can tell if a neighbor is angry, hungry, scared, or sleepy and adjust their behavior accordingly. It's only a short step to focus this empathy-awareness on the host itself, producing self-awareness.
