Missouri-based Smith Electric Vehicles said this week that it is suspending operations in the United States due to a “tight cash-flow situation.”

Its financial troubles came despite nearly $30 million in funds from the Department of Energy (DOE) granted to the company through President Barack Obama’s 2009 stimulus package.

“You’re setting a model for what we need to be across this country,” Obama said when he visited Smith’s Kansas City production facilities in 2010. “You’re doing more than just building new vehicles,” Obama said. “You are helping to fight our way through a vicious recession and you are building the economy of America’s future.”

The DOE grant was supposed to support the construction of 510 electric vehicles for municipal public transportation. The company had put 439 vehicles in service by the end of 2013, according to recovery.gov, using $29,150,672 in taxpayer funds.

They'll have to have something. I was surprised to read it still carries 200K cars/day, as they connected US 75 with I35E years ago which surely took some of the load from the western side. But if you eliminated that stretch there would really be no reasonable way for traffic to get from I30 on the eastern side of town without going through the downtown area known as the Mixmaster which connections I30, I45, I35E and US75. They would have to replace it with something.

I would hate to see that area of East Dallas fuse into what is now the Fair Park area, though, and if they don't do something to redevelop East Dallas that is going to happen as there is more and more development to the north side.

Back in 83-84 I did a lot of accounting & tax work for a large partnership that tried to redevelop some real estate just South of I30 off that freeway, which they took over with DIP financing. They spent many millions in the rehab effort, did a beautiful rehab and no one was interested. The promoters are the only ones that made any money. The area south of I30 is just too far gone.
