All living things can be helped or hurt. It makes a difference how they are treated. Inasmuch as this fact (in my opinion) is uncontestable, it remains only to conclude that all of life has inherent moral value. The weight of an all encompassing ethic rests in the hands of those who have the most power whenever entities meet or cross paths. Generally speaking, that means us.

The first step has been taken by many people in that the need to kill has not escaped the responsibility to avoid as much as possible the causing of pain and suffering. Individually, I think many people can appreciate this. However, man writ large seems oblivious to these concerns. Leaving aside the obvious atrocities involved in modern flesh farm factories, there are myriad other examples. For example, in shrimp harvesting one of the eyes is cut out or crushed in order that the female lay her eggs. Some day a maturing humanity will need to address the myriad cruelties that exist in our relationship to other life...
