U.S. gasoline prices, which already have reached six month highs, are expected to continue to rise due to declining supplies and rising cost of ethanol that is added to the fuel, Bloomberg News reported today.

Nationally, the average price of regular gasoline was $3.56 a gallon, the AAA reported this morning. That's up a half a cent from Tuesday's report and it is up a dime from a month ago.

Locally, consumers have seen a sharper rise in fuel prices. On the Missouri side of the St. Louis area, the average price of regular stood at $3.53 per gallon, AAA reported Wednesday morning. The price is a dime from Tuesday's report and up 17 cents higher than a month ago.

In Metro East, the average price was $3.72 a gallon, up about 8 cents from Tuesday and up 17 cents from a month ago. Gasoline prices in Illinois typically are higher due to higher taxes.

Bloomberg reported today that gasoline supplies are at their lowest levels since November.

Meanwhile, the price of ethanol that is blended with gasoline gained 81 percent in the first quarter of this year. That price may rise further as distillers temporarily idle plants for routine spring maintenance, according to Bloomberg
