Always has been. We have been kept primitive by the southern culture since the birth of our nation. I definitely think the southern ideologies slow progress in this country...............but the regions outside the South had decided that the best approach was peaceful co existence. I think that's changing now.........the physical distances don't seem as great as they once were, and thanks to the internet, the two ideologies bump up against each other a lot more frequently. The spectacle in Congress only emphasizes how dysfunctional things have become. That's why I believe we are living in a time when the risk for splitting is the greatest its been since the Civil War........or at least since the 1950s.
