They aren't necessary but they are done routinely, not only prior to abortions, but for numerous other routine procedures.

For example, I have a client who is an OB/GYN and she does not perform abortion procedures.

Since 2008, when she purchased the original transvaginal ultrasound machine, she has done 989 of them. Her partner, in the same period has performed NONE. Probably because the partner's practice is predominantly Medicaid which doesn't pay for them, whereas the other provider doesn't see Medicaids at all and commercial insurance does pay for them.

It is used for a diagnosis of pelvic pain, or suspicion of any kind of mass or cyst. Totally routine. Again, nearly 1000 of them over a six year period. And not one related to an abortion.
