They might be doing that this year with a staggered launch of 4.5" and 5.5" models. The caveat is that it only helps if Apple preannounces the later model... Otherwise, the 4.5" will generate the usual rush to buy and attendant shortages, and the 5.5" will be met with a depleted demand base (and much buyers remorse).

Either way, the sooner after WWDC, the better, assuming iOS8 reveals screen resolution independence.
