Apple's not going to bother competing with free, but it sounds like a lot of your complaints about iPads could be resolved by adding a keyboard. If keyboard / trackpad is the main driver of chrome book sales, Apple should be able to address that fairly easily. All's that's needed is better pointer support. Then maybe a bigger screen.
Add the cost of the keyboard and screen to an iPad and you're looking at approaching $1K. That has to compete with a virtually free (for users as I described earlier) device for students, business travelers, casual users.

Note that I'm not complaining about the lack of keyboard. I own a couple tablets, too. But I use them for consumption, as do the kids (and they use for games). I'll also use it if I'm going to lunch and I know I'll be reading and not writing much. But if I'm going to be working/typing - the Chromebook is awesome for being on the fly.
