everyone is trying to get the middle of the road people, they forget about their true people who make up the party. At least in the Republican Party this is true. Democrats make the moderates they allow to join them pledge to behave like lock step leftists. The one problem with chasing those in the middle of the road is that while they are adept at dodging the ones chasing generally end up becoming road kill. President GW Bush lost the Congress in 2006 when his base stayed home because he campaigned on religious values and never did anything to get legislation passed to reward the religious right for voting for him and his allies.
