Jlallen, the myth of multilingualism is one of my favorite myths to debunk.

Liberals love to point out how citizens of other countries are more multilingual than Americans, and that this multilingualism leads them to have a bigger, more enlightened world view.

The truth is that they HAVE to be multilingual, because if they stuck to their native languages, their scope of influence is constrained by the borders of their home country, and that is likely to be rather small.

For example, if a Dutch person only spoke Dutch, he or she can only do business in the Netherlands and communicate only with Dutch speakers, which aren't that many in the world. Hence it's no surprise that most Dutch citizens can speak other languages. They kind of have to.

Of course, don't let that reality get in the way of liberals finding new ways to criticize America and excuse its diminishing role in world affairs. Because all they care about is their own feelings of guilt and self-loathing.
