It can all currently all be done electronically. Let's say you have 20,000 oz of Gold in a vault held by JP Morgan and you want to transfer that wealth to Singapore. You clearly don't load a suitcase with it and go through the numbskulls at TSA. An arrangement is made for efficiencies sake to match up people that want to bring Gold into the US and those that want to take Gold out of the US and the net value has to be shipped, to save on shipping costs, with the differences being shipped locally within the US between banks. You Gold will be deposited in an overseas account. In a major crisis or war all bets are off. Then it's too late.
