This idea you ex-Catholic atheists have that all the other denominations are "protesting" Catholics who broke away from the "mother church" just isn't reflective of reality. I've never met anyone who thought of themselves that way. The only "mother church" they or I would recognize would be the one founded in Jerusalem on Pentecost, AD 33.
