Since you own a Mac I assume that you don't place much value on compatibility, either that or everyone you associate with owns a Mac. I switched to a PC a couple of year ago because I just got sick of fighting it. I don't know if I'd pay double for a compatible product, but I'd sure pay a premium, which it doesn't appear that you're factoring in. Another thing to consider is that many of the Jaz drives are purchased by individuals who do not make the decision to buy--for example, I'm a Ph.D. student and several faculty here at the university now own Jaz drives. I asked one of them why he didn't buy a cheaper competing drive and he pointed out that he wasn't paying for it, the university was, and that he wanted a Jaz because everyone else he worked with has one.

This argument is about 5 times stronger for the Zip, so I really think it's too late for a competitor to undo the current Zip momentum, even with a cheaper product. Of course then there are economy of scale arguments, etc. I really think you out to buy some of this stock--you'll be grateful in about 6 months (heck, it might even offset some of your losses in WDC).

<< Is it blind arrogance, or just bad planning from Iomega that causes them to price Jaz2 at such a lofty level, as well as pricing a 100MB (!) laptop Zip at $300. >>

Rocky, Iomega, as always, is marketing in an immaculate manner. The policy is known as "what the market will bear". JAZ2 is not a low-end device like ZIP, but specifically aimed at business and the defence industry. NT servers, that sort of thing. To these people there's nothing particularly lofty about the price. As to the portable ZIP, have you priced the high-end portables tht are using them? These are not your $999 boxes. Again, these are business machines, not teen-age toys. ZIP marketing began at the low end with externals for techies who could hook them up; JAZ2 begins by attacking the high end and will eventually aim at John Q Public if it looks like there's a market there. Same with the portable ZIPs.

>>I noticed that no one has responded to my assertions that Jaz2 is an obscenely overpriced mistake. In my Mac Connection , it is $740 for external. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when I saw that, because SyQuest 1.5 Gig SyJet offers "3 Gigs for $300", and an external PP SparQ drive w/disc is $199 with 3-pack extra discs for $99. That's 4 GIGS for $300!<<

Rocky -

You really have to stop buying from Mac Connection. The Jaz2 list price is $649 for the external and $549 for the internal.

Now I happen to agree with you that the pricing for Jaz2 is too high.

On the other hand, since as you note the SparQ offers 4 gigs for 300 bucks, why would anyone by the SyJet which offers only 3 gigs for the same money?

Answer: They might need the additional capacity per cartridge.

So if they need more capacity than 1GB per cartridge, they might need 2GB. Especially if that 2GB drive could also read/write the 1GB cartridges used where they work and play, in Jaz drives.

Now here's a question for you. If Iomega's recent 25% drop (give or take) from its highs of two weeks ago means that everyone has figured out that the company has no future, what does Intel's >30% drop over the last few months mean?

Of course, my question is facetious. No need to answer. But I notice you never answer my posts anymore. I'm guessing it's because you have no arguments with which to counter mine.
