If you keep repeating and reinforcing a message (true or not), soon people will believe it, and you may start believing it too. That is the essence of marketing / advertising. SUNW is trying to get a similar message with Java (write once, run everywhere)

It would appear that a number of SUNW investors, to some extent , share the intense dislike that McNealy has for MSFT. I am a great believer in SUNW potential, and a lot of that may be realized at the expense of MSFT. But remember the following facts:

1. MSFT, even with technology that we like to ridicule, has executed successfully over the last several years. It is not a surprise that Wall Street loves the stock. Wall Street loves monopolies and MSFT is as close to being one as any (except OPEC maybe). It is also the aim of most for-profit organizations to achieve what MSFT has achieved. How they got there is irrelevant.

2. Everything said and done, un-bundling of IE (a free product) from Windows does not represent a business setback (not in the near term). It may affect their internet strategy, but they have clearly demonstrated the ability to adapt to customer needs. (Eg. Copying the look and feel of Mac in Windows, Web based products, Java ) In each of these cases, they originally decried the evolution as they percieved it would affect their turf, but admitted their folly, not publicly, but in their product offerings.

3. Java remains the biggest threat and for some reason I am sure Bill will figure out a way to turn that to his advantage. They already have the best Java based internet programming tools in the market place.

I have never been a big fan of MSFT's technology and so find it ironical that I sound as if I am defending them on this thread.

Credit should be given where credit is due.
