My wife and I have never carried dental insurance, but recently each of us was told we had to have two crowns plus I have to have some wisdom teeth out. In all, probably 5-6K. I asked, "Can they wait six months?" and the dentist said, "Sure." We took out dental insurance that day and scheduled appointments six months hence when all of it will be covered. Not 100%, but a hell of a lot less than it would have been.

I fully anticipate we will return to the ranks of the uninsured once this work is done. It just happened we had several things come up at once, they're all more-or-less elective, for now at least.

I don't know what the relative frequency of elective procedures might be. I know in the past my wife chose to accelerate an ear surgery she knew she had to have so it would be covered under her work policy rather than our less-beneficial personal policy. Then, she delayed another until it would be covered by Medicare. So, I assume people manipulate the system to their benefit all the time. We have, to the best of our ability, in the past.
