The Republican party was founded as an antislavery party and the parts of the country dominated by Republicans didn't enact Jim Crow legislation, didn't have segregated public institutions. Those things were put in place by Democrats.

When Dems supported segregation and Jim Crow so did the Rs.......most whites did. Then the Dems found the right path, and the Dixiecrats jumped to the GOP.

Almost all the segregationist Democrats stayed Democrats. Carter, Gore's dad, Clinton's mentor, Fulbright, Wallace, Robert Byrd, etc etc etc. There are only a couple who moved to the Republican party - Thurmond and Helms.

Not to the same extent. In particular the KKK was pretty much a Dem thing. Esp the 1st KKK, but to a lesser extent its later iterations as well.

keep believing that old saw.

Usually its a good idea to believe the truth, "old saw" or not.
