They have elections in Russia. He won. The others lost. <Putin is a control freak.. this is why he's held either the Presidency, or the Prime Minister position in Russian government since 1999.> People who pursue presidential positions tend to be that sort of person. They don't just give it away and play golf while they have a choice.

Look at Bill and Hillary Clinton, trying for another 8 years in the White House. If Chelsea comes on stream, they might get a total of 24 years. Bill and Hillary could be guests of Chelsea as elder advisors.

The USA introduced term limits so that people couldn't just go on and on and on, even if the electorates want them.

Team USA is making a mistake treating Vladimir as they have done, continuing the century-long anti-USSR cold war, as they did even when Gorby took over. If Team USA with the Euroserfs stop buying Russia's gas [unlikely, but let's assume that], don't you think that China would be interested in buying any that can be economically piped to China? Or, maybe China would get a 99 year lease on a big tract of land somewhere near the gas fields so that they could build industry there.

China has a lot of people and a big requirement for resources. Russia has not so many people and less capital for investment than China has, but has lots of resources. So there's a natural fit.

800 years ago, the Mongol empire extended all across Asia. If Team USA is not careful, they might achieve the same thing again. Heck, China could just about buy Russia outright. And make an offer to buy Alaska back since the USA debts are burgeoning and are at all time world record levels for all of humanity combined.

My theory [from October 2007] is that come 2020, it's going to get really cold [Little Ice Age proportions, or worse] up north. The Mongols did not do at all well during the Little Ice Age, which ended their empire. So a similar situation could arise.

When you are on the same side as Joe Biden, John Kerry, and Barack Obama you might like to check your premises.

I agree and that leaves power as the only reason for Putin's grab,
an ego that's far to big.

The problem for Putin is that Russia really doesn't have anything to offer it's neighboring countries, other than commodities and weapons. Certainly nothing they cannot obtain from the west with far fewer strings attached, not to mention the attempts to manipulate their gov'ts and populations.
