NO IBM earnings warning - Fortune article loaded with "ifs"

FUD Factor - Fear , Uncertainty and Doubt . Ghosts anyone ?

Toby's link to the Fortune article suggests to me the WSJ article may have found its origin there . The Fortune article is a classic scare item .

Until IBM either shows declining reveunes , or early warns of a 4Q97 EPS shortage , I believe your "Fortune" will be better if you buy IBM stock and not this issue of Fortune magazine .

Remember when ole Danny Dorfman was writing everyday FUD ?

Well is is nice to see Harry and Jules back with their gloom and doom approach to investing in IBM. I would not be surprised to find out that the Forbes guy and WSJ "Heard on the Street " columnist and the M/L analyst plus Steve Smith of Pru are getting their info from Jules, Harry, Mohan and Micheal Burke of SI fame. A few days ago I told Jim K that the WSJ was about ready to do its' qtrly thing on IBM and lo and behold they did it. Now that Milunovich (sp?) has lowered his forecast for this qtr by 6 cents I bet Lou G cannot contain his glee as the financial types in IBM procede to start their "beat the street" work by just enough to surprise all those "experts".

I look at SEG and believe that IBM Storage Systems is one of the big reasons
for their problems.
IBM chip mfg builds most product for inside use and should welcome a price war.
I would not be at all surprised to to find out that DB2 is part of Oracle's problem
Also, suspect that Wall Street did its' dumping of IBM this week and it will be back up next week to the 105 or 110 strike prices by Friday end of expiration.

Re the service side of business; is it not true that part of EDS's recent problems are due to the success of IBM in the outsourcing side of business?

Now some other good news; Is it true that customers are buying extra big boxes so that they can do testing of apps for the millenium problem? Makes sense to me.

Add that to continuing Lotus Notes success, Thinkpad raves, NY Times articles about wonders of IBM Aptiva $999 products, e commerce push by IBM, and Via Voice wonders and this " one product company " eg IBM , is in real trouble like Oracle, Seagate, Intel and yes, MSFT .

Now I have to add that Steve Smith from the PRU has had a sell on IBM since it was pre-split at 42 and someone else saying that IBM would be hurt by slowing PC sales in Japan is really a joke. Unless things have radically changed the Japanese just are not yet? big consumers of PCs. Can anyone refute that last statement?

Now having said all that I do believe that South Korea is not good and I would not be at all surprised to find out that a lot of IT projects have been put on hold which cannot help IBM. I believe that after Japan, Korea is no two to IBM revenu e in the Far East. Now the real question to the 4th qtr is what is happening in Japan with the IT projects that provide the 15% or so of IBM revenue not the pc world? Maybe is will be all academic because the US and EMEA mkts will more then compensate for any shortfalls from Asia in the 4th qtr.

After reading the above, I should have got back into IBM Friday afternoon instead of waiting till Monday.

Regards,

Don
