If I were CEO of Apple, I would want long-term shareholders who actually believe in the company, its business, and its vision. I wouldn't silence myself just to keep some shareholders who don't agree with the company's vision, but are just holding onto shares to make a quick buck. These people are essentially speculating.
That's largely in line with Buffet's reasoning not to split shares... smaller investors are less loyal, more likely to buy/sell rapidly. While they might be less devoted, I think that liquidity is a good thing and that additional buyers have a positive effect on the stock. In the case of Apple activism, I feel the same way. Cook doesn't need to silence himself, but it's not beneficial to suggest that shareholders who disagree with the political investments should sell. Not everyone sees the environmentalism as "well cultivated". Some see it as foolish, even damaging. But why not keep them on board?
