[TCI and set-top boxes]

Hi Pat:

I've heard good things about Flubber. Might try it. But SCREAM2 is going to clean up big time.

Anyway, here's a story from The Hollywood Reporter about TCI's plans. It's not until the 6th paragraph that you find out he's talking 1999.

TCI plan: game, set-tops, match

ANAHEIM -- Tele-Communications Inc. chairman John Malone is ready to spend $4 billion to start blanketing the country with digital set-top boxes offering services ranging from high-speed Internet access to two-way video-on-demand and Internet video telephones. In back-to-back sessions at the Western Show on Thursday, Malone said he plans to order as many as 10 million digital set-top boxes early next year on behalf of his company and others in which TCI has an equity investment. Malone would not discuss the possible cost of the boxes, but industry sources said they will run about $400 each, meaning the order could total $4 billion. Malone said if non-TCI-affiliated cable companies join the strategy, vendor demand could quickly reach 25 million -- with orders totaling $10 billion. "We're talking about a lot of money," Malone said. [Scott Hettrick] Full story
