    Its not just Byrd, the Democratic party across the south was connected to the KKK.

    Yes there you can find racist statements from Republicans even recently but the same holds true about Democrats (except the later are less likely to be called out for them, or if they are, is less likely that their political affiliation is mentioned).

    And Democrats are more often to fully accept (or even insist on) having the government and other institutions treat people differently based on race, than Republicans. Its not just an some outlier mouthing off, its part of the party's policy.

    Not that opposing the Civil Rights Act was inherently or necessarily racist, but Republicans voted for it in larger percentages than Democrats did.
