So what is being said is that no real differences existed in the arena of emotional pain. But then we have this:

"particularly fewer moral objections to suicide""

Translation. The non-believers had no more "reason" to commit suicide--neither subjectively nor objectively. But they did end their lives voluntarily more often because they were not constrained by "moral" objections such as the fear of punishment. Clearly, the vast majority of "believers" think that suicide is morally wrong and this acts as a deterrent. The key point is that the happiness quotient is no different for either group.
