It is absolutely true; we've seen a marked decline in the number of sole practitioners over the last 3 years. In part from docs who just chose to go ahead & retire rather than to deal with it, and others that were bought out by hospitals.

At this point, I would have to say the sole practitioner is destined to be history. I see NONE starting up, and only a few remaining.

A couple years ago I had an OB/GYN customer open his practice in a smallish town. The opening of his office was carefully planned, prior to the opening he purchased a system from us which we had up and running on the first day. In less than 60 days his practice was sold to the hospital in that locality, and he's now an employee of the hospital along with with a couple of other docs who they also bought.

It is not a good development because these doctors are pushed to produce rather than to do the best for the patients. It doesn't necessarily make them bad doctors but there is no doubt they will be pushed by the hospital to produce.
