Y2K-EMBEDDED www.embedded.com: still sleeping?

From C.S.Y2K; thanks to Dave Eastabrook:

'I just visited www.embedded.com and couldn't find one single reference to Y2K, year2000 etc. No conferences next year, no editorials in 1998 for Embedded Systems Programming. Nothing. Have we got this wrong? Is there perhaps no problem with embedded systems / processors after all!

Do these space cadets even know what year it is?

:Dave [ha ha ha ha ha ha h ah ah ah aaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh]'

Y2K-EMBEDDED - GIGA Conference - embedded software is often forgotten

'De Automatiseringsgids 12/12/1997':

David Spinks of AEA Technology: in the Y2K projects, IT managers are often responsible for embedded systems also. They think: 'this system does not use a date, so there is no problem'. They will be sorry for thinking that way.'

Ann Coffou of GIGA: the Y2K project will only be succesful when highest management is visibly endorsing the project

She continued: 'do not worry about VCR, elevators. Do worry about systems for industrial production, hart monitors in hospitals, power plants'.

Making an inventory and testing takes months in a medium size company. Great care is needed during testing. Spinks: 'in GB there are only 6000 engineers that can do this. Without carefull testing, the entire plant can be stopped because of the testing. Errors can occur in PLC's, SCADA, measuring equipment on a gas pipeline'.

Philip Collins, responsible for the Y2K project at British Railtrack: 'some people complain about IT people not documenting their software enough. but engineers are much worse'. He states that 'the IT systems will be ready on schedule; but the planning will be exceeded with 6 months because of the embedded software problems.'

Ken Owen, Gartner Group, Peter de Jager in the same article

memagazine.org

Interestingly, Ken Owen is mentioned in this article together with a guy from Gartner and Peter de Jager.

As most of us know, Ken Owen now works for TPRO.

Millennial mayhem for manufacturing
Good morning, it's Jan. 1, 2000. Will factories function today?

"Part of our reasoning was that surely our code would be replaced," said Peter de Jager
...

"It's possible that a few of them will shut off," said Dan Miklovic, a Seattle-based senior analyst with The Gartner Group,

...
Such estimates, however, often don't include many operations associated with manufacturing systems, according to Ken Owen, systems-integration director for Fluor Daniel in Greenville, S.C., which would raise the real price tag even higher.

....
In the private sector, companies and organizations are using the Web to gear up for conversion. The site for the Automotive Industry Action Group in Southfield, Mich., for instance, readies its members for y2k to ensure the viability of the supply chain of the Big Three automakers (www.aiag.org/checklist.html). In addition, Ken Owen, systems-integration director for Fluor Daniel in Greenville, S.C., recommended the Web page of Milwaukee-based Allen Bradley (www.ab.com) as an example of a vendor providing good compliance data (most links on this page require a user log-in).
