Hi bentway; Re: "I'm totally happy with that, Karl! Not that the (D)'s are perfect, far from it, but they are light years ahead of the regressive (R)'s.";

You'll be totally happy with it for a decade or two. But keep a good eye on Europe. What's happening there will eventually happen here. When the government becomes so broke that it cannot afford the social nets (and the nets will be stretched more and more as the older population becomes larger and the younger population becomes lazier), the next step is a very brief anarchy and then the military takes over. And that, my friend, is something that you're not going to like at all because when the military takes over, it isn't the "left wing" of the military that runs the show.

If you bother to read the back pages of the NY Times you can see that this process has already taken place in many many countries. Sometimes the "anarchy" consists of the population demanding that the government step down, sometimes it's collapse of the currency. It's different in different places, but in terms of cultural values, the US is still a right-wing country. A great current example of a country where the leftist state fell apart and was replaced by a dictatorship is the Soviet Union / Russia. Not exactly a bastion of liberal values. A democracy in name only.

As far as when we go down the tubes, I don't think it will be until many decades have gone by. I don't expect to live to see it. But our destination will become more and more obvious over the next 25 years as Europe continues to fall apart.
