Jail is a really dumb alternative to drug treatment.

In most of these instances, the people have underlying issues which require hours of counseling. They're not getting that in prison.

What they ARE getting is a guarantee of never having a meaningful job in their entire life. What they ARE getting is an association with criminals that will last a lifetime.

Because they're sick? Because they have a genetic defect? Or because a teenaged girl's step dad abused her sexually? Does that really make sense to you?

Not unlike Iranians killing rape victims if you ask me.
