In most of these instances, the people have underlying issues which require hours of counseling. They're not getting that in prison. What they ARE getting is a guarantee of never having a meaningful job in their entire life. What they ARE getting is an association with criminals that will last a lifetime. Because they're sick? Because they have a genetic defect? Or because a teenaged girl's step dad abused her sexually? Does that really make sense to you? Not unlike Iranians killing rape victims if you ask me.
