Koan's slave labor comment is BS. The info below comes from 2008 but it tells the story. Non-union auto companies pay only a little less than UAW jobs, but have lower "legacy" costs which are killing the UAW companies. Take into account living costs are lower in the south. This is far from slave labor:

It would be BS if they paid a lot less then GM, even if they paid minimum wage. If you take a job voluntarily, and retain the right to quit at any time, you aren't a slave.

He was also wrong when he says that the employees (calling them "slaves") don't like the new job opportunities.
