According to RT, there was an option to remain in Ukraine: <Really now? It was? Two weeks after 30,000 unidentified "green men" with Russian weapons, invaded and a ballot that doesn't even provide a choice to remain with Ukraine? Where was the organized opposition? Some election you're asserting there.. I can create an election like that too.. Hell, Saddam constantly receive 99% of the vote when he was elected.. > North Korea's elections are 100%. Kim is more popular than Hussein. I prefer to not look away. For several decades now I have been a keen observer of the political shenanigans which dominate the world. The "green men" were perhaps already in Crimea because there were significant military bases there. Heck, those bases have been there so long there are probably men born in Crimea who had grown up there and joined the military and so they were not really doing much other than enacting some self-defence before things got out of hand, in their own country! In any event, Crimea's outcome was much much better than what you are suggesting by way of hideous carnage in the west of Ukraine. Hawk, it's the election that counts. <So the Aussies can invade NZ with Balaclava masked men, install a local political thug as your president and give you two weeks to democratically decide to be annexed by Australia while they have those masked thugs marching around repressing any attempt to formulate opposition? > I guess you know where Balaclava is and in winter there, it's quite cold. I have worn a balaclava. But they were not all or most in balaclavas. As long as there's no violence, I don't care who supervises elections. Maybe the UN is right, maybe not. Russia is quite big and it's certainly murderous to opponents. <Last month, the United Nations issued a report saying that Russia was the second leading country after Syria from which citizens ask for safe haven. According to the report, about 40,000 Russians asked for asylum in countries around the world in 2013, a 76 percent increase from the year before. Germany and Poland were the most popular destinations for Russian asylum seekers. > Do you normally accept UN reports as gospel? The UN's climate claims are rubbish. But of course there would be a lot. In NZ we have unlimited "refugees" wanting to get in for the free stuff they'd get. We have lots of Russians here too these days. One of the ways to get in to the free-stuff places is to be a refugee. Simply wanting to go somewhere isn't considered a good reason. Mqurice
