that difference of gofo from zero matters. Seems to matter
only the other way - when gofo is positive, gold is trashed.?

Exactly. Remember LTCM...I think that was their name Long Term Cap Management...they thought they had the math down but then the Thai Bhat Crisis happened and their model didn't take into account panics and they went under and the Fed had to do the First Bailout ever setting a precedent.
