That was a thoroughly entertaining read. It's probably one of the few good things that will come out of this mess.

I'm sure we've all met people who speak racist thoughts with people they presume won't get upset. I was just at a Meetup where someone did that (racist republican small businessman- now isn't that a shocker?). I don't care to challenge people in public- but I'll never be in the same place at the same time as he is, and I know a bunch of other people felt the same way. Although we aren't willing to make a scene, we'll vote with our feet. But people of the left and right, often of a certain age, have this racist core that nothing is going to change. And let's not forget how racist blacks can be, or Asians- especially the older generations. Young people seem to be a lot less racist, and a lot more enthusiastic about having friends of all colors and creeds. As long as we have elderly cranks, we will have these stories- and they will come from the left and the right- because there's no shortage of racism to go around. You'll notice on SI some SIers are obsessed with posting the race of every criminal matter they can find (with a black perpetrator)- and those folks are clearly obsessed with race, but would probably deny they are. Racists will be more and more marginalized as our society gets more and more color blind- and that will make racists very uncomfortable, and there will be episodes like this, where they are made an example of. That's the way societies change.
