If you take the vengeful connotation away, which the justice system does and its individual human agents should keep in mind, you are left with punishment in the corrective or disciplinary sense. Discipline comes from the root word meaning disciple. The goal of correcting wrongful behavior is to guide the individual back onto the path of descent behavior.
