They provide computers and printers to those that can't afford them, and that is a big subset of the population. You frankly can't function very well in today's world without access to a computer. Some are even putting in 3D printers... if each library unlocks the potential in a handfull of people they are worth the money. You can provide computers to everyone who uses one at the library for a fraction of the cost of keeping the library open.
