It isn't merely once in a while and the mistakes are huge and can and often do wreck peoples lives.

When a farmer can't use his own grain to feed his own livestock without it being called interstate commerce, regulation is out of control.

Come on I-node there are thousands of lawyers/politicians on every level, city state and federal writing laws and regulations every day of the year. There are millions, maybe a billion regulations. Everything you touch everyday is regulated. Yet, we survive. Even thrive, compared to most of the world. How could that be possible if the "mistakes are huge" and "wreck peoples lives"? Almost every regulation is just common sense to protect the consumer... and the ACA will likely prove out the same.

Regulation and unselfish cooperation has been a human strength since we were near-ape clans. It's what we do, on every level, everywhere on the planet. And it's a big part of the reason our species has been so successful, dominating our environment. We keep each other in line (regulation and religion) and sacrifice for the clan (taxes). It's our meme.

It is, truly, stifling at times. But it's in the DNA. And it works.
