Unlike the Malthusian reproductive rate of all societies 100 years ago, population implosion is more normal these days. So there are not hordes of spare young men who have to be sent over the horizon to find their fortune at the expense of other tribes. <Maybe the next thing you'll give your approval to is genocide and ethnic cleansing.. After all, Putin needs "Lebensraum" for his young Russians, so they will stop applying for political asylum in other countries.. > It's not quite that simple: <Wow.. I'm just underwhelmed at how you advise one country to tear apart AND ANNEX the territory of another and you think that's okay... > Victoria Nuland and the USA HQ of NATO was fomenting revolution in Kiev. That wasn't with the intention of bringing peace, light, harmony, happiness, health, prosperity, longevity, fun and love to Ukraine. It was with the intention of jamming military hardware right up close to Moscow on the borders of Ukraine. Just as was done in other east European new NATO states. Crimeans agreed [near enough for government work as far as I can tell] to join with Russia. Russia agreed to take them on. In the same way, Scotland might vote to stay in the UK. That would be a similar situation. Quebec too is considering independence. Hong Kong was annexed to China [the part that wasn't in the expiring lease]. Taiwanese could vote to join China. East Germany was annexed by West Germany. These things happen. They are not necessarily a bad thing. Maoris agreed to Queen Victoria being sovereign and them becoming British Subjects which got them British passports. NZ was part of New South Wales then was made independent, then independent of UK [somewhat against our will]. We could choose to sign up to Oz. If there was some conflict with China, then occupation by Oz troops pending a referendum would be a good idea. If Russia can arrange a constitutional conference, referenda and elections and forestall the carnage being encouraged by the USA and NATO, then that's a good thing. The UN might like to help rather than hinder. The UN is a bit of useless outfit when you consider Rwanda, Srebenica etc etc etc. A day late and a dollar short. Unless they do an idiot thing like go hunting imaginary WMDs in Iraq. The UN needs a good revamping. Putin could arrange such a conference in Kiev which would be fun. Mqurice PS: You won't find much in the way of NZers going postal: <Auckland Returned Services Association vice-president Matt McMillan said he was disappointed the battle of Minqar Qaim controversy had been revisited. "They [New Zealand divisions] were desperate to get out. In the heat of the battle things happen - if you are cornered, you have to do all you can to get out." > The description of what happened is world's apart from what Calley and co did at My Lai. I'd have to read more to see how wrong it was. Wounded people are normally not much threat and it seems a waste of energy to bayonet them. Such action is also likely to lead to reprisals, which is why such "civilized" rules were set in the first place. My uncle Jim was a prisoner after such a conflict in Africa for some years in Germany. They were treated reasonably [more or less, for the times].
