I don't follow you. The profit equation is influenced by:

1) buying calls or shorting puts if one thinks the stock is heading up

or

2) buying puts or shorting calls if one thinks the stock is heading down.

Out of the money calls would mean a profit to whoever shorted them, be they a specialist or institution or individual trader. Perhaps Barb! can fill in some more details.
