I have a Patriot flash drive, and run portable apps on it. Also use it for storing files, been using it for years, no problems with lost data or data erosion. I think these drives now a days can hold data just like hard drives, for years and years to come.

Notebook manufactures are also using them for storing recovery media on them, you can create them yourself with the software on the computer or order then from the manufacture at a cost.
