There was an opportunity to bring some stability to that region and Bush recognized that. I understand why a lot of people opposed the war, and why he is criticized for it today.

But the reality is no one could ever have anticipated he would be followed by an utterly incompetent president, one even worse than Carter. His lack of understanding of foreign policy is nothing short of astonishing. That Bush was doing what he believed was best in the circumstances is beyond question; people can and will argue about what was or wasn't accomplished there, I'm sure, long after Koan and I are gone.

In 2014 a Gallup poll found that half of people believe we shouldn't have gone into Iraq. Roughly the same half who voted for Obama, I suspect. Also, just over half believe that the war was a failure. Either way, the country is split on it.
