I agree, though 16MP isn't going too far for a high-end cameraphone. As you suggested, features are just as, if not more, important. Face erase, real-time HDR, and many other advanced editing and UI functionality is great to have. The new hire might inspire Apple to add more of this type of thing to the iPhone 6 or 7, which would be a good thing.

Absolutely. That's what I mean. Nokia has made phones with both the ability to capture high level detail and they added killer features to make the most of them. That's why it will be interesting to see if the iPhone 6 moves in that direction... I think 16MP is going to be standard for the high end phones now, plus an increasing set of the advanced rendering features. I don't think it's necessary for them to exceed phones like the S5 in these areas, but at least keeping pace would be wise.

Exactly. Pixel count is not a synonym for picture quality and is a meaningless number to cite in that context.

When a manufacturer or a message board poster cites pixel count as being more important than optics, software for image stabilization, focus, exposure, white balance, and even pixel size, you know you're hearing from someone who is neither well-informed nor well-intentioned.
