But that is exactly what I do. I test others ideas against science. And I go with the science.

The only ideas I insist on for myself are compassion and basic human decency.

To the extent your deliberations are those of an individual and your opinions are derived from an individual's consideration, they matter. Individuals treat their convictions as though they matter or that they should matter to others pondering the same issue. It is not enough to simply form strong sentiment about the value of your convictions, it is necessary to consider challenges from others who doubt your audacity, the validity of your integrity, and thus the robustness of the viewpoint you are assessing. This is how clarification is reached and confidence that your judgment is sound is acquired. Nothing should be more important to an individual exiting in such uncertain circumstances.

A forced choice eliminates an individual's complex, heartfelt, and thoughtful considerations. In most cases it reduces an issue to a trivial lilliputian edict of group loyalty.
