Patrick,

You notice that the article says pricing advantage!
HP is buying marketshare and they are using a reserve fund to do this with. So this negatively affects their profitability and is not sustainable.

I am not sure what IBM is up to but it could be in response to HWP inititives.

In any event, this is turning into a slugfest. There is also a lot of bad information being put out. It will take time before it becomes clear.

I hedged my core position today so I can enjoy the holidays.

Regards,

Jim Kelley

Hi Pat: Pardon me for buttin' in ,I know you didn't ask me, but I saw the news as well and thought i respond with my 2 bits worth anyway. Do you really think this could affect the stock Monday? I don't know, perhaps but the way I see it is that now all the boys have a level playing field, Dell having lost the advantage in Pricing for commmercial accounts (assuming what we hear is true), unless ofcourse Dell has an 'ace' up their sleeve that nobody knows of. One big advantage Dell has is the marketing success they enjoy via the NET, nobody has duplicated this yet despite some feeble attempt by some of the competitors. I don't know,to declare so boldly that Dell has lost all the pricing advantage in commercial accounts just because they lost a few sales is rather foolish at best, and premature at worst. My gosh, I don't suppose whomever come up with this 'conclusion' were expecting DELL to get 100% of the commercial accounts!

Patrick, Dell might still have a price advantage. the reported pricing parity might be based on old price of DELL. DELL just cut the price. Now they might be ahead again. See the following release.

Dell Cuts Prices Up to 14 Percent On Selected Pentium II
Desktops Signaling Commitment to Superior Value

Prices Also Reduced More Than 10 Percent On Selected Notebook PCs

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 3, 1997--Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL - news), the world's leading direct computer systems company, today reaffirmed its commitment to being a price leader by reducing prices up to 14 percent in the United States on
