A liberal is someone who says to a pregnant woman, “Don’t smoke! It’ll hurt your baby!”—but tells her it’s okay to abort that baby.

Have you heard of the VMT? It stands for vehicle miles traveled, and it is progressives’ latest attempt to plug ever-growing state budget gaps caused by, alas, progressive policies.

VMT is being tested in Washington and Oregon as a “voluntary” alternative to state gas taxes. California is considering following suit. In exchange for a rebate of the gas taxes you paid—more than 50 cents per gallon in California—drivers agree to pay a per-mile tax.

There are some catches, as there always are.

First, you have to pay the gas tax when you buy your gas and wait for a rebate, which is akin to giving the government an interest-free loan till your rebate arrives. Also, at least I’d imagine, you have to have a stockpile of receipts. Lose some or all of them and you’re out of luck. Governments aren’t known for accepting the honor system when it comes to you getting your money back.

But, most importantly, you have to allow the government to track your odometer or install a GPS tracking device in your car so they can record every mile you drive, and every place.

Right now it’s an option, but wearing seatbelts used to be an option too.

Now, seatbelts are a primary offense—you can be pulled over if police see you not wearing one.

In other words, things can change.

Minimum wage order sends veterans packing from nursing homes
..........................................................................................................
May 08, 2014 By Gerry May KTBS.com

SHREVEPORT, La -

Some military veterans are being forced to leave their nursing home. It's an unintended consequence of President Obama's executive order in February to raise the minimum wage for new federal contract workers from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour.

Sandy Franks, public affairs officer at Shreveport's Overton Brooks V. A. Medical Center, explains that nursing homes that have contracts for subsidized care from the Veterans Administration become federal contractors. If they refuse to raise their wages, their contracts will not be renewed.

Former Marine A.J. Crain just wheeled himself into his new room at Shreveport Manor on Mansfield Road when he got the news that the home's contract will end this month.

"We fought all your wars, and now we're broke. Where do we go from here?" Crain asks.

"We gotta go. Simple as that. We gotta go," says Vietnam War Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient John Washington.

"I think it's very wrong. I think it's very distasteful," Washington goes on to say about Shreveport Manor's decision. "I mean some of these people here work their backsides off to keep this place going," he said, pointing to a woman changing his bed.

Shreveport Manor is owned by Gamble Guest Care. Their Chief Operating Officer says if they raise wages for workers there, they have to do that at all eight of their facilities.

In a statement, Gamble COO Matt Machen said, in part, "The additional labor expenses are simply unaffordable. As such, many long term care providers have indicated that they will no longer seek or renew V.A. contracts."

Franks at the V.A. agrees that this has the potential to be a national problem as more V.A. contracts with nursing homes expire.

Sarah Palin accuses media of double standard with Hillary Clinton
.....................................................
MSNBC ^ | May 19, 2014 | Clare Kim

Sarah Palin slammed the mainstream media for treating Clinton with a double standard after Republican strategist Karl Rove raised concerns about the likely presidential candidate’s health.

“Thank goodness liberals are consistent in refusing to apply double standards, thanks to their disdain for hypocrisy – so they’ll come through once again,” the former vice presidential candidate wrote sarcastically on her Facebook page Monday evening. ”Rest assured these self-designated protectors of what they obviously believe is the ‘weaker sex’ needing protection in the political arena will elevate political discourse.”

Palin doubled down on her disdain for the media by signing off the post with a mention of her youngest child, Trig, who was born with Down’s Syndrome.

“This just doesn’t happen at this respectable level of American politics. Just ask me. And Trig,” Palin wrote.
