I owned one of the early 1MP digital cameras 15 years ago and you couldn't even get a 3x5 to look decent. If you've ever printed a 4MP image at 8x10 using a quality printer, you can certainly notice a difference, but that's not the real problem. Zooming is the problem. If you take video or stills at 4MP-8MP and you have to employ digital zooming to any notable degree, you lose a lot. Try shooting a sporting event from a sideline and try to capture the details of the action, for example.

There's no doubt that there's such a thing as overkill, but there's a reason that many of the high-end phones have moved to 16MP+... some people utilize the power. And as others have noted, it's not just the MP that matters, it's the rendering, advanced editing features, etc. that matter just as much. I think Apple was wise to take on Partinen, and they likely did so because they know it's important to keep pace with the advancements in the camera dept.

OT a little

The gap between the iPhone 5S' 8 MP sensor and the S5's 16 MP sensor has no real world benefit, except for the occasional need to digitally crop (which should be avoided if you can zoom by foot).
I always zoom by foot, but last time I did that with my iPhone, I stepped too hard and now the front glass is broken. :-)

Sorry, I couldn't resist...
