The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition investors in junior oil and gas player Painted Pony Petroleum ($13.16) have watched their shares gallop ahead in recent months, and analysts believe the ride is not over yet. The Globe's Brenda Bouw writes that in the past eight months, Calgary-based Painted Pony has graduated to the Toronto Stock Exchange and then the S&P/TSX composite index, taking its shares up about 70 per cent along the way. The company, which is largely focused on natural gas plays in northeastern British Columbia, has been beating production expectations and lowering costs. There is also speculation the company itself could be a takeover target, particularly among energy giants looking to set up a liquefied natural gas business in B.C. About 90 per cent of the company's production is from its natural gas properties in B.C. and the rest from its oil assets in southeast Saskatchewan. "Painted Pony is looking more attractive than ever now," said AltaCorp Capital analyst Jeremy McCrea, who has a "buy" on the stock and a $17 price target. All 11 analysts who cover Painted Pony have a "buy" or equivalent rating on the stock, with a price consensus over the next year of $15.20.
